About WVSOM Health
Our mission is to provide compassionate healthcare of the highest quality
to our patients in an educational environment.
WVSOM Health is headquartered on the campus of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in historic Lewisburg, West Virginia. As a comprehensive, not-for-profit Rural Health Clinic, WVSOM Health is committed to providing outstanding primary care to residents of the Greenbrier Valley and surrounding communities.
The clinic opened in 1976 as the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Clinic, Inc., serving as a faculty practice and teaching site for WVSOM students and professors. That educational mission remains central to the clinic’s work today. As the need for expanded primary care services in Greenbrier County continued to grow, the clinic evolved to better serve patients and families throughout the region.
In January 1997, thanks to a federal appropriation secured by the late Senator Robert C. Byrd, the WVSOM Clinic, Inc. relocated to its current location at the north end of the WVSOM campus and became known as Robert C. Byrd Clinic. Since that expansion, the clinic has continued to add critical services designed to meet the needs of patients in a rural care setting.
Today, as WVSOM Health, the clinic offers a wide range of primary care and specialty services, including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, pediatric pulmonology, osteopathic neuromuscular medicine, behavioral health, acute and same-day care, diabetes education, medical acupuncture, social services and culinary medicine. With more than 40 physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physician residents on staff, WVSOM Health continues to provide compassionate, comprehensive care while supporting the education and training of future osteopathic physicians.
For more than a decade, the clinic has achieved designation as a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. In 2021, the clinic received the Organization of the Year Award for Excellence in Rural Health from the West Virginia Rural Health Association.
