Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, or ONMM, focuses on the connection between the nerves, muscles, bones and the rest of the body. This interdisciplinary field incorporates elements of general medicine, neurology, orthopedics, rheumatology and physical medicine to help improve function, restore mobility and support the body’s natural healing process.

WVSOM Health’s ONMM providers have advanced training and are board-certified specialists in osteopathic evaluation and manipulative therapy. They care for patients in outpatient, inpatient and post-surgical treatment settings using a hands-on, whole-system approach designed to identify and remove barriers to motion, function and healing.

Many ONMM providers also have specialized training in cranial and other osteopathic techniques, allowing them to care for patients across all ages and stages of life, from newborns to older adults. ONMM may be used to help manage conditions such as plagiocephaly, scoliosis and chronic respiratory concerns in children. It may also support mothers throughout pregnancy by helping promote wellness, prepare the body for delivery and minimize pregnancy-related pain.

Treatment by an ONMM physician can be an excellent alternative to surgery or a helpful addition to a pain management plan.
